After over a decade of visioning, leadership and delivery, Sacramento’s Innovation District is on the horizon.

The SwiftEnvirons team is grateful for a visit to the Aggie Square project. Thanks to Claire Drummond of Wexford Science and Technology hosted our tour. Our focus for this visit was Wexford’s Social Lab. This shared research lab serves UC Davis and the Sacramento biomedical research community.
Congratulations to the Wexford team including Whiting Turner, ZGF and Affiliated Engineers and UC Davis for the fabulous effort in completion of Sacramento’s anchor institution. Aggie Square promises to fulfill the role of leading the region in research and healthcare. Starting with UCDavis Chancellor Gary S May, the entire team has succeeded in delivering Sacramento’s Innovation District.
Inside the Social Lab
The Social Lab at Aggie Square is unique to the Sacramento region. Social Lab places the region on par with other major biomedical research communities. Wexford will curate the spaces and tailor them to user needs. They already invested $1M in benchtop equipment. Wet benches are flexible with overhead utility connections. Rooms are designed to meet a wide variety of research and equipment needs focused on specific research initiatives. Shell space is dividable and available to be custom-tuned to specific needs. The Social Lab is intended to provide research and collaboration needs, from a dedicated parking structure to access to the unique Aggie Square common spaces and programs.

A note regarding SwiftEnvirons LLC
SwiftEnvirons LLC is a woman-owned small business specializing in healthy architecture and design. One of our current efforts is supporting CIRM (California Institute for Regenerative Medicine) and their grants across California. One grant is building shared research laboratories across the State of California. Construction started in 2025 at four host academic institutions. SwiftEnvirons is grateful to visit the Wexford Social Lab just before occupancy, as it provides inspiration for the development and operation of shared labs focused on cultivation of biomedical research.
