Sharing a bit of personal inspiration.
Roger Berry’s sculpture in the lobby “Bouquet” is the latest in a continuum of the artist’s series of dichroic mirror and stainless steel sculptures at UC Davis. This work forms the eastern terminus of the pedestrian walkway proceeding West through the UCD academic core and through the Education Building towards the Main Hospital. At the oculus of the Education Building is Roger Berry’s “Emergence”, 2011. This is reminiscent of his “Portrait of a DNA Sequence”, 1998 at the Life Sciences Building (now Green Hall) on the Davis Campus.
These three sculptures strike a personal note for me and my own professional history at UCDavis. I started at Architects and Engineers in 1998, just as the Life Sciences Building opened. I then moved to campus architect roles at the Sacramento Campus, walking under the “Emergence” sculpture daily and then playing a role in developing the pedestrian corridor that terminates where “Bouquet” now lives in the Eye Center.
Roger Berry’s work for all three of these pieces are composed of Dichroic Mirror on Stainless Steel, suspended above atrium or lobby. As the artist writes: “The dichroic mirrors have a beautiful ephemeral shimmer in ambient light”.
